The day started out normal enough, I rapidly worked on the machines that had been checked in over the weekend for repair. I simply grabbed one off the shelf, read the service order, found the problem, fixed it, billed it, returned it to counter, and then contacted customer. Until............(Note the periods, this means something ominous is looming ahead)
I pulled an odd looking machine off the shelf, It was an AST computer, and it was a very high end workstation model. Granted AST was no longer in business and the machine was very old, it however was a VERY impressive machine in it's time, and I was not too shocked to find it still being used. I made a mental note to find out what was wrong, and suggest an upgrade on this antiquated machine.
I place the machine on my bench, and turn it on. I'm immediately presented with a very common error message for old machines "CMOS Checksum invalid press F1 to continues or del to setup" This may sound scary and you may think your computer is dead, in reality all this means is a little $2.00 battery inside has died and needs to be replaced. Why they don't say "Little $2 battery dead! Please replace" I don't know.
I replace the battery, reprogram the CMOS and computer boots right into windows........(More periods so you know something is coming up now)
On the desktop is a scene that was beyond wrong, Child pornography, Obviously child pornography. There were also folders on the desktop filled with similar pictures. I immediately snapped the screen off and contacted the owner of the company, who in turn contacted his lawyer. We were told to Contact Child Protective services.
45 minutes after calling CPS we had 2 FBI agents come to visit me. I was asked many questions, and asked to describe the computer and content. I noticed the computer has a US Government Department of Forestry asset tag. This didn't go over to well witht he FBI. They were not yet allowed to look at machine because they were lacking a warrant. We were asked to keep machine until they had a proper warrant.
Several days later I was instructed to contact customer and tell him his computer was ready. The Two agents then arrived in our company uniforms, we had not provided them with uniforms, they made them themselves. They worked as employees for two day. The Man finally arrived. He was arrested.
I dunno what happened but I'm glad someone as sick and twisted was taken care of. Why would you bring a computer into a public place filled with that filth? Why would you have it period?
