I receive the phone call from a customer who's company server no longer works after they moved to a new location. Never a good thing, hopefully it's card creep or something simple. The Customer does what I tell him, no luck. He wants me to come on site and look at it. I tell him we are a service shop and we don't do on sites, he is welcome to bring the server in, and I'll be happy to look at it.
The server enters and instantly I can tell whats wrong with it. It's Melted. The case is smoke damaged and the plastic parts have drooped. The Customer now at this time when I point out the damage explains that there old office burned down, and they "saved" the server from the wreckage. The server was toast, I ask about backups, and of course they were sitting on top of the server. No good. I take the hard drives out, hook them up to my test rig. After a few hours of labor I was able to recover the companies business records. (side note, Western Digital makes one hell of SCSI drive).
The Moral?
