3 teenagers approach my repair bench, they ask me if we repair laptops. I reply and tell them we do. They place a case on the bench, and something in the back of my mind thinks, "did I hear a slosh? naw..." I open the case and our drains a sticky brown fluid. Dr. Pepper to be specific. and a WHOLE LOT OF IT. In this case was a Toshiba laptop sitting in about 1/2 inch of soda.
The kids explain to me that they spilled a 96 oz glass of Dr. Pepper into the case and laptop. But instead of removing the laptop, they closed the case (with soda) and waited 2 days to bring it in for repairs.
Now one must wonder, why they did not at the time of soda baptism by the good Dr, drain the excess "baptismal fluid" out of the case and laptop. No the decision was made that marinating the laptop was probably the smartest choice. I personally believe that beer makes a better marinade but who am I to judge.
The outcome is actually surprising. With only a cooling fan, and CD-ROM needing to be replaced (and a lot of cleaning) the laptop led a long productive life. The owners however never returned to pay the bill. I used that laptop for 3 years, then the laptop moved on to a new owner, where it was killed by a slightly over enthusiastic doggy.
